Davidson’s Mains Roundabout

About this project

Update 15 June

We are on track to reopen Davidson’s Mains roundabout this Friday (19 June) but need to extend work to finish the pavements. However, we don’t need the full closure to do this.

On Friday, we will install temporary 3-way traffic lights to continue and complete the project.

Key dates

Friday 19 June

  • Roundabout closure ends in the afternoon
  • 3-way temporary traffic lights will be installed following this
  • The Shuttle Buses running from Cramond to Tesco will stop running at 7pm
  • The 47 Shuttle Bus, run by Lothian Buses around Cramond, will end in the evening

Saturday 20 June

  • The Davidson’s Mains Gala Children’s Parade will go ahead as planned with contractors managing the temporary traffic lights.
  • The 21 and 47 buses will return to their normal routes from start of service in the morning.

Monday 22 June

  • Work continues on pavements around Davidson’s Mains roundabout, expected to finish mid-July.
  • There will be pedestrian access to properties and businesses on Quality Street, Main Street and Cramond Road South during this work. The diversion at East Barnton Avenue will remain.

We are finalising the dates with the contractor but expect the daytime pavement work, with temporary traffic lights, to run until the middle of July. After this, it will switch to overnight resurfacing (7pm to 6am) for up to three weeks, and the daytime temporary traffic lights will be removed.

As with all temporary traffic lights, there may be some impact on traffic and the reliability of bus timetables, and we advise you to plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey.

You can keep up to date with bus times at .

We will update this page as work progresses on the pavements and overnight resurfacing.

Corbiehill Road

We are planning work along Corbiehill Road, outside Davidson’s Mains Primary School. This is expected to start in July during the school holiday, and we will use temporary traffic lights. We do not need a road closure for this work. We are working to minimise disruption as far as possible and will send a further update once we have a confirmed date and details about the work.

Update 12 May

As you are aware, work was initially programmed to finish on Friday 19 June. However, because of ongoing resourcing issues, the contractor has requested an extension to the contract programme to complete paving work using temporary 3-way traffic lights.

We are assured by the copntractor that from 19 June the current road closure on the roundabout will be permanently lifted, in time for the Davidson’s Mains Gala Children’s Parade, and will remain permanently open from Monday 22 June, but with temporary traffic lights in place.

This means that the 21 and 47 buses will return to their normal routes and the shuttle buses will stop. There may be some traffic disruption because of the temporary traffic lights and we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

We are finalising the dates for the extended programme with the contractor but expect this to run until the middle of July using the temporary traffic lights, at which point the work will switch to overnight resurfacing, and the daytime temporary traffic lights will be removed.

We will keep you updated on progress.

Background to the project

On Monday 13 April we started work to significantly improve the safety of Davidson’s Mains roundabout for pedestrians, particularly those with mobility issues. This was in response to the results of an online public consultation that concluded in January 2026 and longstanding concerns with pedestrian safety.

The improvements will include:

  • upgrading the roundabout at the junction of Main Street, Quality Street and Cramond Road South to provide increased space for pedestrians and safer zebra crossings
  • widening the pavements around the roundabout
  • resurfacing Cramond Road South from Barnton Avenue through the roundabout
  • a new continuous pavement on Cramond Road South to the north of Tesco
  • upgrades to the tactile paving on the crossing at Barnton Avenue and Cramond Road South
  • replacing and upgrading the street lighting and Belisha beacons at the roundabout.

We expect work to take around 10 weeks, finishing in the middle of June, but are working with our contractor to see if there are ways we can reduce the length of the disruption.

Unfortunately, to carry out the works safely, we had to fully close the roundabout to all vehicles, including buses, meaning no access for vehicles through the roundabout from Cramond Road South, Main Street or Quality Street.

Working in stages

Work will be done in two stages starting from Monday 13 April.

Phase 1
Roundabout – junction of Cramond Road South, Main Street and Quality Street.

Phase 2
Cramond Road South – from Barnton Avenue to roundabout. Estimated 2 weeks with work expected to be carried out in evenings and overnight to reduce disruption.
