Friends of Greenspace Groups

Insurance and safety

These guidelines will help your group succeed long term. They will establish your space as a thriving greenspace for everyone in the community.

Before you plan or host any events, you must secure appropriate insurance coverage. Public liability insurance protects your group against claims from accidents or injuries. This is necessary for community groups that host events. It protects your friends group if someone from the public gets hurt or if something gets damaged. For example, if someone trips over equipment at your event and gets hurt, this insurance can help pay for legal costs or compensation.

Speak to a qualified insurance provider to get the right coverage for your group.

Public liability insurance

Our public liability insurance will cover volunteers in some circumstances. It is likely to cover friends groups if

  • friends are assisting us with a Council activity
  • friends are authorised by us to carry out the activity
  • a Council employee is present to supervise the activity.

These activities need Council authorisation through your Parks and Greenspace, Natural Heritage or Cemeteries Officer. You must inform them of your full plans in writing or via email.

These activities are also subject to site-specific risk assessments. These ensure that standards are met, tasks match the capabilities of those involved, and the public are not put at increased risk.

Contact your Council officer in advance to let them know of any activities and to agree on a risk assessment.

and offer training on many of these practical tasks.
